Snippet Reviews: Book Club Readings 2004
beth — Thu, Mar 22 2007
We started off book club in March 2004 and managed to fit 5 books into the year. If you can do math, you might have figured out that meeting every 6 weeks should have had us reading 6 - 7 books. Sadly, real life gets in the way and spring breaks, weddings, births, and holidays often bump us into fewer meetings. D'oh!
Persuasion, Jane Austen - an interesting story with a memorable heroine, this book is romantic and was a great start to the book club. Also, Jen brought super scrumptious cupcakes to book club. Mmmmmm.......
Indiana, George Sand - Why oh why did we read this depressing book next?
The Time Traveler's Wife, Audrey Niffenegger - A complete emotional rollercoaster; I was balling my eyes out for half the book. Except for Holly who loved it, we felt it was manipulative and soundly panned it.
In Cold Blood, Truman Capote - How could anyone not find this book amazingly well-written, compelling, and chilling? Watched "Capote" recently and totally wanted to reread this (but forgot to, whoops)
Vanity Fair, William Makepeace Thackeray - At 900+ pages, a long read and hard to digest, but overall I liked it. I'm about the only one though - of all the people to come to book club that day, no one else made it through the whole thing (Delia read it all but was stuck at a wedding).
Funny story - the person who recommended this book was reading it at the time, raving about it, and really wanted us to read it. 900 pages is a bit long for 6 weeks, so we agreed to read a short book for the upcoming book club (the aforementioned In Cold Blood) and to read Vanity Fair the meeting after that. The person who raved about the book didn't show! Not only did she not come to the discussion, she never came to book club again. Did she hate the book and was too ashamed to ever show her face again? Did she fail to finish it? Did someone do something horrible to her house while we were there? It's all a mystery....
Hey book club girls, feel free to leave your 2 cents! Or if you just want to comment on the books, let me know your thoughts in the Comments.

mea culpa for Indiana. I was
delia (not verified) — Fri, Mar 30 2007mea culpa for Indiana. I was totally in thrall to Judy Davis' performance as George Sand in Impromptu. A film I heartily recommend. I should have had us watch that instead of reading Indiana. How could someone who lived that life write such drek?! I'll never understand it. Anyway, movie party at my house - i'm totally game. Plus you get to see a young Hugh Grant acting the fey artiste (Chopin).

I didn't join book club until
Holly (not verified) — Thu, Mar 22 2007I didn't join book club until we read The Time Traveler's Wife, which I still love. I read Persuasion recently and enjoyed it thoroughly, although not as much as P&P or S&S. But it was leaps and bounds better than Mansfield Park and Northanger Abbey.
