Review: A Wolf at the Table
beth — Thu, Jul 24 2008
Augusten Burroughs has written a slew of memoirs, which run the gamut from poignantly hilarious to dark and unsettling (to use that word again). His most recent book A Wolf at the Table: A Memoir of my Father falls into the latter category.
Not to go on an alliteration spree, but this book evokes 3 words: haunting, horrific, and heartbreaking. Burroughs' recollections of his dangerous and damaging father pull you into the world of an abused child, and demonstrate vividly how abuse is transferred through generations.
I recommend A Wolf at the Table, but it is by no means light reading. It is far more unsettling and upsetting than Running with Scissors (although that's no walk in the park like the movie previews suggested). I wouldn't recommend it if you're already feeling depressed. Although, if you're feeling all Mary Poppins I guess this wouldn't be so great either. I know, read it when you can then watch Mary Poppins immediately afterwards!
