Review: The Secret Life of Bees
beth — Thu, Jan 8 2009
Given that most of the books I've been reading lately are about pregnancy and babies, it's no surprise I haven't posted lately.
From the back cover description of The Secret Life of Bees by Sue Monk Kidd, I was expecting this to be complete crap. It goes on and on about discovering oneself, the bond of womanhood, secret goddess power... barf. A back cover written for fans of Oprah picks and sappy books?
I finally broke down and read this over my winter holiday when, looking through my bookshelf of unread books, I realized it was that or Middlemarch (have you seen how thick that is?). I was surprised to find that I actually liked it. I read it in 2 days, and it was a very compelling story. Not great literature, but a good read and perfect for a day with a blanket, popcorn, and mug of hot chocolate.
