So this is another one of those books that Delia loaned me. We just read A Room with a View for book club, so Delia thought I might be interested in reading another one of E.M. Forster's books, Maurice too.
I cannot tell you how much I loved this book. I gobbled it up. It was so hard to put down when I had to go to bed or finish my lunch break every day.
Maurice was published posthumously in the 1970s because it dealt with a subject that was still very much taboo and could get one jailed in Forster's lifetime - homosexuality. When Forster started the book, he had to goal to write a homosexual love story with 3 main characters that had a happy ending. The book not only deals with the social strictures against homosexuality but also against one of his usual topics, class structure and the social strictures of relationships with those outside your class.
The book is beautifully written. Although some of the topics of the story are very dated, the language itself and the overarching themes resonate even with today's reader. You can tell this was a subject that Forster cared deeply about, because there is great passion in many of the passages.
If you like Forster and other books from his time period, I highly recommend Maurice.
