I listened to Arthur Conan Doyle's The Hound of the Baskervilles via a free podcast called The Classic Tales podcast (you can subscribe via iTunes). It was broken into 6 episodes and it took me a couple of months to listen to. I can't always listen to audio versions of classic literature because my mind tends to wander and suddenly I've missed an important piece of the story! Not such a problem for lighter podcasts, but it just doesn't work with weightier material.

This was my first Sherlock Holmes story, but half of it doesn't even feature Holmes. Told from the point of view of Dr. Watson, it explores the mystery of a family supposedly cursed from a crime committed several generations previously. Charles Baskerville dies suddenly and suspiciously, and his nephew Sir Henry Baskerville arrives from Canada to claim his inheritance. But Sir Henry is beset by strange happenings and warnings. Is the family really cursed and pursued by a demonical hound? Holmes and Watson are hired to solve the case. Watson travels with Sir Henry to the country house, and Holmes works on cases in London, with Watson reporting to him. Eventually Holmes reappears and they work to solve the mystery.

I enjoyed this book even though I'm not normally a mystery fan. I will definitely read some of the Sherlock Holmes short stories now. Holmes is actually a bit of a pompous jerk - he's very bossy and likes to hold his secrets close, revealing them when it will most awe his friends and clients. But the story was intriguing and the mystery convoluted without being too preposterous (just a little bit). I did find the ending a bit overworked; Watson and Holmes discuss the case weeks after it ends and I felt the book could have ended the chapter before.

If you haven't read any Sherlock Holmes but you like mysteries, I recommend The Hound of the Baskervilles, although you may want to check out Doyle's earlier Holmes short stories too.

If you like audiobooks and classic literature, check out The Classic Tales podcast. B.J. Harrison does a pretty good reading, although his intros are a little over the top.
