My sister-in-law (and friend) Delia recently loaned me several books. The first one I read was Dirty Sugar Cookies by Ayun Halliday (natch, since it's about food, my favorite subject). Ayun has written several books including No Touch Monkey and writes the zine East Village Inky.
Dirty Sugar Cookies is a memoir, with all the stories revolving around food. A picky eater as a child, Ayun evolved into quite a foodie, willing to try just about anything within her price range (not high). After each story, she includes a real recipe with tongue-in-cheek instructions. I've got to remember to write down the recipes for (heart-attack-inducing) spanakopita, "gub-gub" brownies, and rice custard. Yum.
I loved this book. It is incredibly funny and manages to make your mouth water within a few pages of feeling totally grossed out. I read this book in just two days, and would have finished it a lot sooner if I didn't have to work! I also managed to feel incredibly jealous of all the traveling Ayun has managed to accomplish in her life, just as I did when I read No Touch Monkey.
As soon as I finished reading this, I went and added her other books I haven't read to my Amazon wish list. Highly recommended.
