Books Tasted - Everything bookly (and a few other things)

About Me

I'm just one person in a vast world of readers who happens to have the technology* to have her own book review site, instead of adding to the gazillion reviews already on Amazon, etc. My only qualifications are a love of reading, a loving sister-in-law who pesters me to post, and an English BA. Sometimes I get bored of just posting book reviews and post projects I'm working on, mostly craft stuff.

* completely thanks to my wonderful husband without whom I'd just use blogspot.

Review: The Tipping Point

beth — Sun, Mar 30 2008

I've heard that I should read this book before, but didn't pick it up till my husband brought it home from the library. Even then, I didn't show much interest until I heard the author, Malcolm Gladwell, on an episode of This American Life. He was telling an unrelated story, but he was hilarious. I was listening as I walked the dog, and I thought, "Wait... don't we have a book by him at home?"

Book Review: Ragtime

beth — Fri, Mar 28 2008

I picked up this book at Half Price books because it kept showing up on lists when I was searching for classics to recommend at book club. This was a weird book. There's not a lot of dialogue, and paragraphs go on for miles. There was way more sex than I was expecting. Way more! It was interesting, but I don't know if I would recommend it.

And Blogger thinks "dialogue" is misspelled. Crazy Blogger.

Review: Oliver Twist

beth — Fri, Mar 28 2008

I think I read this back in January. Obviously, I don't remember a lot of details, other than some discussion with Delia about it in IM that involved the phrase "Please sir, I want some more." Which I of course misquoted, although I did look it up just now to make sure I had it right!

This book was good, if not Dickens' best, and I enjoyed it. When you're done reading it, you will go, wait a second... Oliver wasn't even mentioned for half the book!

Cough, cough

beth — Fri, Mar 28 2008

I am coughing because of all the dust rising as I blow off this blog. *hack*

I haven't posted partially because I haven't been reading a whole lot and partially because I haven't been feeling creative with the posts. So I think I'm going to try a new thing. I'm not going to force myself to write in-depth book reviews; they may be short blurbs. Also, I may post about other things besides books! Since I don't have a book club anymore, I haven't been reading as much.

Review: The Guy Not Taken: Stories

beth — Tue, Sep 4 2007

Another book I picked up from the Recent Additions section of the library was Jennifer Weiner's The Guy Not Taken: Stories. Jennifer Weiner has written several novels, including Good in Bed and In Her Shoes. This is a collection of short stories written over the span of her career to date.

Review: Happiness Sold Separately

beth — Wed, Aug 29 2007

I loved Lolly Winston's novel Good Grief, about a woman recovering from her husband's death. It was moving and felt real, and I've been watching the New Releases shelf at the library since then waiting for her next book.

Review: Embroideries

beth — Wed, Aug 29 2007

After I finished Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, I was left with a void to fill. So I went to the library and checked out several books. Of course, I read the picture book first. Woohoo, less words! Reminds me of writing junior high book reports, finding the book with the biggest text and least pages....

Currently reading...

beth — Tue, Jul 24 2007

I'm currently working on rereading the Harry Potter series before starting the last book in the series. I haven't decided yet if I'll write reviews for these. I mean, come on, you know I'm going to highly recommend all of them!

Review: Love in the Time of Cholera

beth — Tue, Jul 24 2007

Normally when I read a classic, I like to take the time to examine the meaning, read articles about the hidden depths of the novel, etc. etc. Not this time. For once, I did not even finish a book in time for book club. D'oh!
