Books Tasted - Everything bookly (and a few other things)

About Me

I'm just one person in a vast world of readers who happens to have the technology* to have her own book review site, instead of adding to the gazillion reviews already on Amazon, etc. My only qualifications are a love of reading, a loving sister-in-law who pesters me to post, and an English BA. Sometimes I get bored of just posting book reviews and post projects I'm working on, mostly craft stuff.

* completely thanks to my wonderful husband without whom I'd just use blogspot.

Review: Eat Pray Love

beth — Sat, Jun 28 2008

Getting most of my books from the library (yay library!) puts me a little behind on the bestsellers list than everyone else on the earth, so I just recently finished Eat Pray Love: One Woman's Search for Everything Across Italy, India, and Indonesia by Elizabeth Gilbert, which has been on the New York Times Bestsellers List for 74 weeks.

Review: Marie Antoinette: The Journey

beth — Mon, Jun 23 2008

I watched Marie Antoinette, the movie starring Kirsten Dunst and directed by Sofia Coppola, a few months ago. The movie almost felt like it didn't have a plot; it meandered from scene to scene without any feel of cohesion and when it was over,  I felt like I had just watched one of those videos of a log burning in a fireplace - it was like opening the door to someone's daily life without gaining a whole lot of insight into why they are doing what they do.

Ch-ch-ch-ch-changes (turn and face the blog)

beth — Sat, Jun 21 2008

I'm making a few small changes to the blog this weekend. A little bird pointed out that my categories were somewhat scattered, so I am consolidating those and also adding more. In an effort to update more regularly, I'm going to post more than just book reviews. These are my anticipated categories now:
  • Book reviews
  • book club (maybe one day I'll have one again. webcammed club, anyone?)
  • book wishlist
  • stuff I like
  • random
  • projects, including: craft projects, online projects, eco projects, and house projects

Review: The Audacity of Hope

beth — Wed, May 28 2008

I've never attempted to read a book by a politician before. It was a bit of a struggle for me to get through The Audacity of Hope by Barack Obama. I read just a few pages a day for weeks, but I was determined to finish it.

Review: Stardust

beth — Sat, Apr 19 2008

This is one of those rare instances where I saw the movie before I read the book. Normally, I'd probably prefer one over the other or pick out all the details that were different between them and tsk tsk appropriately. But in this case, the book and the movie are so different that they're really two different beasts.

Review: Bloodsucking Fiends

beth — Thu, Apr 10 2008

I kind of like Christopher Moore against my will. His books have outlandish plots and heaps of vulgarity. They are also usually wildly amusing.

Review: Take the Cannoli

beth — Mon, Apr 7 2008

I recently recommended Sarah Vowell to my mother, who is laid up at home after foot surgery. I took my own advice and read one of her books that I hadn't previously read, Take the Cannoli. This collection of essays is her second book.

Review: Marvel 1602

beth — Fri, Apr 4 2008

Marvel 1602 is a graphic novel written by Neil Gaiman and illustrated by Andy Kubert. I love me some Neil Gaiman. I ate up his Sandman series, which thankfully my brother owned because I would never have discovered them on my own.

A series of 8 comic books, Marvel 1602 are the characters from the Stan Lee Marvel Universe, but retooled and placed in England and the New World in 1602.
