Books Tasted - Everything bookly (and a few other things)

About Me

I'm just one person in a vast world of readers who happens to have the technology* to have her own book review site, instead of adding to the gazillion reviews already on Amazon, etc. My only qualifications are a love of reading, a loving sister-in-law who pesters me to post, and an English BA. Sometimes I get bored of just posting book reviews and post projects I'm working on, mostly craft stuff.

* completely thanks to my wonderful husband without whom I'd just use blogspot.

Tiny Little Review: The Magician's Nephew

beth — Sat, Sep 13 2008

The 6th book in C.S. Lewis' Chronicles of Narnia is The Magician's Nephew. This book follows the adventures of Polly and Diggory as they deal with Diggory's dastardly Uncle Andrew and the evil Queen of Charn, travel between worlds, and witness the birth of Narnia.

Review: The Horse and His Boy

beth — Sun, Sep 7 2008

The Horse and His Boy, the 5th book in C.S. Lewis' Chronicles of Narnia, is my favorite. It's the story of two children escaping Calormen with two talking horses, and of course no escape is ever smooth.

Teeny Tiny Little Review: The Silver Chair

beth — Sat, Sep 6 2008

I think that C.S. Lewis really starts to get into the adventure groove with The Silver Chair. This book returns to previous stories' one narrative line, but everything is much more descriptive, even the fight scenes. The personal character struggles are a bit more mature, but there is also more admonition (by Aslan) for the characters' negative traits.

Not my favorite story, but still pretty good. I'd probably like it better if they let Jill do more - after all, it is pretty much her story! But she's a girl, so no fighting for her.

Tiny Little Review: Prince Caspian

beth — Sun, Aug 24 2008

That Susan. You really get a feeling that C.S. Lewis doesn't like her that much, even before what happens in The Last Battle.

The book is fun, but the adventure scenes are pretty short and not very descriptive, except for the contest between Miraz and Peter.

Review: The Minotaur

beth — Mon, Aug 11 2008

Maybe mysteries are not my thing. I've never really been interested in picking up a mystery, but decided to branch out on my last library foray and picked up The Minotaur by Barbara Vine, a pen name of writer Ruth Rendell.

Review: A Wolf at the Table

beth — Thu, Jul 24 2008

Augusten Burroughs has written a slew of memoirs, which run the gamut from poignantly hilarious to dark and unsettling (to use that word again). His most recent book A Wolf at the Table: A Memoir of my Father falls into the latter category.

Review: Fragile Things

beth — Wed, Jul 23 2008

I love Neil Gaiman. He has an amazing imagination and is able to take our everyday world and twist, and suddenly there are all kinds of fantasy elements tied to the fringe. He is usually very effective at drawing the reader into the story by making his main characters part of the "normal" world, and having them sucked into the fantastical as unsuspectingly as we readers are. (Everything that was wrong with The Somnambulist, Gaiman does right.)
