Books Tasted - Everything bookly (and a few other things)

About Me

I'm just one person in a vast world of readers who happens to have the technology* to have her own book review site, instead of adding to the gazillion reviews already on Amazon, etc. My only qualifications are a love of reading, a loving sister-in-law who pesters me to post, and an English BA. Sometimes I get bored of just posting book reviews and post projects I'm working on, mostly craft stuff.

* completely thanks to my wonderful husband without whom I'd just use blogspot.

Review: The Secret Life of Bees

beth — Thu, Jan 8 2009

Given that most of the books I've been reading lately are about pregnancy and babies, it's no surprise I haven't posted lately.

From the back cover description of The Secret Life of Bees by Sue Monk Kidd, I was expecting this to be complete crap. It goes on and on about discovering oneself, the bond of womanhood, secret goddess power... barf. A back cover written for fans of Oprah picks and sappy books?

Review: Make Him Look Good

beth — Mon, Oct 27 2008

Make Him Look Good is a book by Alisa Valdes-Rodriguez, author of the popular chick lit book The Dirty Girls Social Club. I picked up a hardcover copy of this 2007 book for $5 in the book store's bargain bin. It was not worth it.

Review: Saving Grace

beth — Tue, Oct 21 2008

Saving Grace is another novel by Lee Smith, and like On Agate Hill, it is set in the south (primarily North Carolina). Florida Grace Shepherd is raised in a semi-nomadic family whose patriarch is a snake-handling preacher. Her childhood is defined by her father's erratic behavior and charismatic personality, and by her defiance and compliance with her family's lifestyle.

Password protected wikis

beth — Sun, Oct 5 2008

We own several domains, and we recently moved things around a bit. This move unfortunately caused the loss of all of our data. Whoopsie daisy! Not that we didn't make a backup, of course - we're smarter than that. But we're still unable to give a sigh of relief, because our backup is corrupted. D'oh!

I'm movin' on up

beth — Sun, Oct 5 2008

Bryan bought the domain bookstasted.com, so soon I will be moving from Blogger to my very own site! Once I get it all set up, that is.

Two questions for you:

(1) Can you suggest any good sites for CSS templates? I know of Zen Garden, but of course that's not really a template site, per se.

Future Craft Project: Amigurumi

beth — Fri, Oct 3 2008

I saw these little crocheted animals last year at Maker Faire, but at the time couldn't figure out how to master a sphere.

Review: The Last Battle

beth — Wed, Sep 17 2008

The Last Battle is the final book in the Chronicles of Narnia, both in published date and Narnian chronological order. I was really excited to get to this book, most likely because I knew it meant I had finally finished rereading them. After only a page or two, I remembered the story and began to dread to read it. I actually raced through it, I think mostly just to be done with it.

Warning: if you haven't read the books and don't want to know the story, stop now.

Review: The Hound of the Baskervilles

beth — Sat, Sep 13 2008

I listened to Arthur Conan Doyle's The Hound of the Baskervilles via a free podcast called The Classic Tales podcast (you can subscribe via iTunes). It was broken into 6 episodes and it took me a couple of months to listen to.
